The following information was found amongst the bits and pieces that we inherited in the pub.  I cannot verify the accuracy of this information as I do not know the source - but when I find some time, I will endeavour to find out more.

The Inn was formerly known as Mereclough Bottom and was part of a watermill complex.  The building dates back to the late 12th Century and was orignally the living quarters of the mill owner.  The surrounding land belonged to the Lords of the Manor of Copley & Scircoate.

In 1521 the mill was owned by John Waterhouse and the building was used as a Moot Hall or meeting place.

The large fireplace is older than the date inscribed upon it.  The initials dated 1722 are those of John and Mary Wainhouse who owned the house at that time and had the fireplace reconditioned.

In the 18th Century the Inn was known as 'The Chain' in relation to the Chain which was placed across the canal to stop barges from working on Sundays.

We have had plenty of stories relating to the Ghost of the Inn - Clocks that mysteriously stop, noises in the cellar and spirits that appear in the kitchen.  We have seen the doors open by themselves (although probably draught assisted rather than sprited) and believe some of the sightings to be alchohol related!  However if you have a good story or know any interesting information about the place which you would like to share (including photos) - please let us know!
